Dentures

Dentures are removable false teeth made to fit over the gums. Dentures are used to replace missing teeth and the surrounding tissue. By investing in dentures to cover any gaps, you are eliminating potential problems that can come from missing teeth.

Every denture is unique to the owner. Dr. Ciaran Casey Dentist will take a mould of your mouth to make sure dentures fit perfectly over your gums and jawbone. Usually, this is done as soon as your teeth are removed.

Types of Dentures

There are many types of dentures but the main two are full dentures and partial dentures.

Full dentures, also known as complete dentures, are usually made after the teeth have been removed and the gums have had a bit of time to heal. Conventional dentures are ready for placement around 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. On the other hand, immediate dentures are a type of denture that is made in advance so they can be positioned in the mouth right after the teeth have been removed, meaning you won’t have to go a time without teeth.

Partial dentures, or a bridge, is the same as full dentures except the brige only replaces a few teeth.

When natural teeth still remain and are healthy, a partial denture is worn in place of the teeth that have been removed.

Caring for Dentures

Dentures are a big investment, and proper care for them is important not only to keep them lasting long but also for your health, too.

Make sure to always handle your dentures with care, brushing and rinsing them daily. However, do not use toothpaste with your dentures. Instead, use a soft bristle brush to remove food and plaque build-up. Make sure to rinse your dentures after every meal.

Always clean your dentures with a specified denture cleaner to make sure they are sanitised properly. As well as cleaning your dentures properly, be sure to store them when they are not being worn. Your dentures need to be kept moist, so keeping them in a denture cleanser solution or in water is best.

Once you have been fitted with your dentures, Dr. Ciaran Casey Dentist can talk to you about the best methods for caring for your false teeth.
